Friends,
Our first walk of 2015 on Sunday 17th May is a really lovely green walk - FOLLOW THE FOLLY BROOK. There will be readings along the way so bring your poems. Apart from the very beginning at Woodside Park and the end at Mill Hill there are no roads, no noise, no pollution, only the sound of birdsong and running water. This really is a very pretty walk and we will see 3 nature reserves, woodland, meadows, and farmland as well as the brook and Darlands Lake. Tea stop will be at Finchley Nurseries and after a further 0.6 mile walk through Oakfield Wood we will catch the 221 bus back to Sussex Ring for a last 0.3 mile stretch back to Woodside Park tube. Total distance is 3.9 miles including the bit after the bus ride.
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
All our route will be along footpaths but the ground in places after all the winter rain was very muddy. It has now dried out but the foot traffic through the mud has left the ground pitted and dried out with pock marks. There are also a couple of stiles and other places of slightly rough terrain. We are recommending this walk only for the sure footed among you.. The pace will be leisurely and stewards will be there to help BUT you do need to negotiate some rough ground and a few minor obstacles such as fallen trees.
At the moment the route is completely dry but if there is further heavy rainfall between now and the 17th it may become muddy in places. If this is the case we advise you to wear stout walking boots or shoes that will take the mud.
As we are walking so far from roads for most of the route there are no dropout points along the way.
You will need to bring a packed lunch with you on the day. Also a bus pass or Oyster card for the ride back. You can make your own way back on foot via Burtonhole Lane but it is 1.6 miles to Woodside Park.
One thing that makes this walk so special is that we do not go near a road for the most part and it is very pretty. Let's hope for good weather on the day. Hope to see some of you there.
