Greenacre Walks - Judges Walk

GREENACR
WALK

 Judges Walk

Sunday 12th November 2017.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any better - it does. Due to popular demand - a second Greenacres Autumn Walk - THE JUDGE'S WALK. Meet outside East Finchley tube station, Sunday 12th November at 10-50am for an 11-00am start.

Please note earlier start time. The clocks go back at the end of October, it gets dark earlier and, most important of all, the Golders Hill Park Cafe closes at 4pm.

For The Judges Walk we take a break from our exploration of disused railway lines and uncover green treasures a little closer to home. We start at East Finchley tube station and head south to Hampstead Heath for an exploration of West Heath. There is a very old and picturesque footpath on the very edge of the Heath called Judges Walk and this is the furthest point from the starting point on this walk.

We will stop for packed lunch in the Hill Garden. Don't forget to bring packed lunch. There are toilets on the Heath Extension, at a point which is conveniently located about half way round our circuit and, of course at the cafe at the end. There will be readings on route and maybe one or two surprises along the way. This is another FAB walk with plenty to see and it looks good at this time of the year. Where else could you see: a brook, water features, ponds, lakes, water gardens, playing fields, parkland, heathland, garden suburb, deep dark woods, tree lined footpaths, formal gardens, carved wooden bears and real live deer - all in the space of four hours?
Don't forget to bring a bus pass or Oyster card and a bottle of water! The cost of this walk is £4.00 per person.

Greenacre Walks - Walk the Alban Way

GREENACR
WALK

 Walk the Alban Way

Sunday 1st October 2017.
We will meet in the car park Mill Hill Broadway station 11-20am
where we will purchase group cheap day return tickets
(Entrance Bunns Lane)
RSVP: mikegee1968@gmail.com

The Greenacre autumn literary walk continues our theme of following disused railway lines but this time something slightly different - we take the train from Mill Hill Broadway three stops up the line to St Albans where we will find the 'Alban Way'. We read poetry too! We are getting a special party rate £4.10 from Thames Link Trains, this means staying in the group there and back. Otherwise it will cost you more.

We pass many green spaces – cemetery, schools, parks. - and Hill End Garden of Rest. This used to be a cemetery where mental patients were buried in unconsecrated, unmarked graves. It’s now part garden of remembrance and part nature reserve.

Marconi works used to be near here. New housing is built very close to and/or encroaching on the old line which is now very narrow in places.

We leave the line at Hixbury Lane and head for Highfield Park. This is extensive parkland which was once hospital grounds and is now run by a trust and open to the public. Old hospital buildings are now residential.

We go through garden suburbs to a footpath across Verulam Golf Club and back to The Alban Way. Good views of River Ver from Alban way. Under bridge and back to St Albans City Station for the finish.

Total distance of loop, station to station – 4.9 miles.

Don't forget to bring a bus pass or Oyster card and a bottle of water! The cost of this walk is £3-50 per person.
